Andean Studies Section: Andean Histories in the Age of Revolutions

Sunday 11 January 2026·11:00 am

Once understood as the quintessentially revolutionary period in Western history, the Age of Revolutions field has evolved in recent decades to include Latin America as one of the core regions where revolutionary processes took place. Historians have shown causal connections between Latin American revolutionary processes and the Atlantic revolutions, and they have explored similarities, continuities, or influences between them. Yet the variety and complexity of processes within Latin America, particularly within the Andean region, complicates overarching hypotheses such as those the Age of Revolutions’ historiography typically proposes. In this panel, we bring together a group of experts to explore how the history of the Andean region can contribute to the narrative of the Age of Revolutions.
