Reframing the Age of Revolutions: The Global Silver Trade, the South Atlantic, and the Iberian World, 1750–1850

This enquiry into the global Iberian world – that is, the Spanish and Portuguese empires and their successor states - in the age of revolutions engages with three main fields of historical research: Atlantic history, Latin American independence, and global capitalism. The age of revolutions - as originally conceived by R. R. Palmer and Eric Hobsbawn – has undergone important changes in recent historiography. Although the Atlantic framework is central to any approach to the age of revolutions, current debates have been shaped by scholars working in various areas.

To advance the discussion, this two-part workshop aims at defining and assessing the impact of the revolutions across the Iberian world at several levels of analysis: legal, economic, imperial, social, and political.
