Revisiting "Violence against Women": Feminist Activisms in the Late 20th Century

This panel brings together three different perspectives and geographic contexts that each take up recent histories of the longstanding question of violence against women. Following recent works inviting scholars to revisit the material reality of continued violence against women globally and to think towards the possibility of less violent and more liberated futures, this panel seeks to broaden our historical understanding of what violence against women looks like, its devastating impacts, and relationships to global systems of capitalistic oppression. Featuring scholarship on overlapping issues from three different places in the same historical moment, our panel joins the conversation about how we as scholars need to understand the recent history of global violence against women as an integral part of broader systems of oppression and control.
