Strategies for Teaching the History of Women’s Voting Rights in K–12 and University Classrooms

The 2020 centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment prompted innovative research that transformed our understanding of the women’s voting rights movement. Historians reframed the fight in a variety of ways, from providing new lenses to understand the leadership of Black women to updating turning points in the movement and re-evaluating the significance of less familiar sources. This roundtable asks: how can we translate these fresh perspectives into our high school and university classrooms? What kinds of strategies work well for integrating this story into rigid curriculums that tend not to emphasize women’s history? What kinds of historical sources attract students’ attention and prompt meaningful discussion? How can we best convey the complexities of this lengthy movement?
