Women, Gender, and the Far Right: Ibero-American Perspectives

This panel presents new comparative studies on the gender history of far-right movements in Brazil, Portugal, and Spain. Building on Cowan (2022), Finchelstein and Pinto (2018), and Deutsch (1999), we explore the circulation of ideas among authoritarian networks in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, using gender as the primary lens. How were Brazil’s Integralistas connected to Spain’s Falangistas or Portugal’s Catholic right? How did women shape far-right discourse? We also examine how regimes with “fascist potential” (Trindade, 2016) addressed gender. Recent research highlights transatlantic links, yet women’s political roles in these movements remain critically understudied.
