How can science education research inform (and be informed by) policy?

This session draws on a collaborative project between the University of Southampton and ASE exploring the relationship between science education research and policymaking, with the aim of fostering dialogue between the two communities of practice. In the first 30 minutes we will present key findings from the project, including insights from a document analysis of how learned societies currently use research evidence in their policy work, as well as interviews with science education researchers and policy stakeholders in England. This will be followed by a discussion with members of ASE’s Policy Group, focusing on ASE’s role in strengthening productive relationships between researchers and policy actors in science education. The session will be of interest to anyone engaged in or curious about science education research and policy. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the current landscape and have an opportunity to contribute their own perspectives.
