Policy session on teachers' educational use of research

Teaching is a profession that demands specialised knowledge, refined skills, and a commitment to continual professional growth. Access to high-quality research is vital to this process—but should teachers aim to be research-engaged as well as research-informed? And how do we define what counts as “high-quality research”? This session will explore the challenges teachers face in accessing and applying research effectively, and examine how the ASE can advocate for members to help overcome these barriers. Drawing on our own experiences as teachers and researchers, as well as insights gathered from delegates at the ASE Teacher Developers Conference in June 2025, we will open up discussion around what meaningful engagement with research looks like in practice—and how it can best support professional learning and classroom impact.
