Science: Inclusive strategies to support learners with SEND

Thursday 8 January 2026·2:45 pm

The session will be delivered jointly by HFL Education advisers Becky Rothwell (SEND adviser) and Anna Mapley (Secondary Science adviser). Becky has over 20 years experience of primary leadership and science teaching and is now a SEND adviser. Anna has over 25 years experience of secondary science teaching and leadership and is now a Secondary Science adviser. Together they have collaboratively worked on identifying strategies to support all learners - especially those with SEND – to thrive and flourish within the mainstream primary and secondary classroom. The session will provide theory and practical examples of how evidence-based adaptive teaching strategies can be used effectively. Through attendance at this session delegates will: - Develop skills to explore the needs of learners in the science classroom. - Explore how the EEF recommended SEND ‘five a day’ approach can be used within primary and secondary science teaching to support pupils with SEND. - Learn how different adaptive teaching strategies can be implemented in the science classroom. There are 2 blogs available which would give further information about the style and content of our session. This could be used as CPD in department meetings, or by mentors with ITT, ECT or UQT staff.
