Strengthening professional growth through learning communities

This session explores the impact of learning communities on professional development, drawing on insights from the Primary Science Quality Mark professional network and leadership programme and work of Science Across the City (SATC) with science subject leaders. We will consider how collaborative environments help build connections across the broader sector and encourage holistic growth as educators and leaders, ultimately enriching children's educational experiences. By participating in diverse learning communities, teachers connect to share knowledge, exchange effective practice and engage in reflective discussions addressing successes and challenges. The session will offer practical guidance on how learning communities can create inclusive, supportive, and dynamic spaces that nurture both individual and collective professional growth, contributing to a more balanced and enriched educational landscape. In this session participants will begin to: • Understand the role of learning communities in supporting professional growth and improving practice • Identify key features of effective collaborative learning environments • Consider how we learn as part of a learning community • Understand the way professional communities help connect different layers of the sector In addition, participants will: • Reflect on their own experiences within learning communities and consider how they might engage collaboratively with other professionals moving forward. This will be a facilitated workshop which will heavily involve participants reflecting in conversation for more than 50% of the session. They will be guided to consider research findings and respond to these.  We will challenge participants to consider their own participation in learning communities and to identify some personal goals for future action.
