Rooted in Identity: Cultivating Self-Reflection and Self-Expression Through Visual Art in the Classroom

In a rapidly changing global and educational landscape, English language learners bring not only linguistic diversity but also rich social, emotional, and cultural experiences into the classroom. This workshop explores how visual communication, specifically the symbolic image of the tree, can support language development, learner identity, and well-being in EAL contexts. Through a hands-on multi-modal activity, students envision themselves as a tree, illustrating roots, trunk, and branches to represent their past, present, and future. This metaphor enables learners not only to reconcile with nature but also to reflect on their socio-cultural roots, current realities, and future aspirations. The creative task is followed by structured language activities that promote narrative development, descriptive expression, and reflective dialogue. Facilitators will demonstrate how integrating visual art with language instruction can lower affective barriers, increase engagement, activate prior knowledge, and foster inclusive classroom spaces where meaning-making extends beyond linguistic accuracy.
