Advancing Equity with the WESS-SP: The First Spanish SEL Survey Assessing Students with Learning Disabilities

Wednesday 11 March 2026·3:30 pm

The Winston Essential Skills Survey-Spanish, the first Spanish social-emotional learning assessment for students with learning disabilities, is reliable and valid with Puerto Rican teachers. This survey can empower Spanish-speaking special educators to assess their students’ social-emotional learning and develop targeted interventions to improve student outcomes. Participants will be able to: 1. Utilize the Winston Essential Skills Survey-Spanish (WESS-SP) to assess social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies in students with learning disabilities (SwLD), accurately interpreting assessment results to identify individual student strengths and areas for growth. 2. Design and implement targeted, culturally responsive SEL interventions for Spanish-speaking SwLD based on WESS-SP data. 3. Integrate SEL assessment findings into individualized education plans (IEPs) and school-wide practices, fostering a positive school climate and supporting improved academic and social outcomes for SwLD.
