Biliteracy in Practice: Using Bilingual Books to Support Biliteracy Development and Morphological Awareness

There is growing interest in morphological awareness in bilingual language and literacy development. Research links it to foundational literacy skills. This presentation highlights how bilingual books in speech-language therapy target morphemes, build grammar and literacy, and promote bilingual competence.Participants will be able to: 1. Define biliteracy and identify its linguistic and cultural foundations, including how bilingual children develop and apply morphological awareness across two language systems. 2. Describe how the linguistic features of bilingual books can support morphological skills and biliteracy development. 3. Demonstrate how to implement a therapy activity using a bilingual book to target morphological awareness skills, including how to scaffold learning in two languages and align the activity with language goals for bilingual students.
