Bridging the Gap: Applying the Science of Reading to Learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

This session introduces a professional development initiative that integrates the science of reading with evidence-based practices for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Participants will explore five foundational pillars of reading through the lens of IDD-specific instructional strategies. The session highlights exemplar lesson plans, video lectures, and educator supports. Participants will be able to: 1. Clearly describe how foundational reading research applies to this population, including the ways in which cognitive and communication differences impact literacy development. 2. Gain knowledge of instructional strategies tailored to each of the five pillars of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—as well as written expression, with specific adaptations for learners with IDD. 3. Leave with access to professional development resources to extend their learning and support the implementation of effective reading instruction for students with complex learning needs.
