Co-Teaching: Research-Based Recommendations for Implementation

Co-teaching may be an effective practice for educating students with disabilities in inclusive settings. This presentation reviews research on co-teaching in general education classrooms, shares the results of a three-year study of co-teaching in secondary mathematics classrooms across Utah, and provides recommendations for implementation drawn from implementation and improvement science.Participants will be able to: 1. Summarize research on the effectiveness of co-teaching involving general and special education teachers, including identifying strengths and limitations of the body of research. 2. Define seven co-teaching models. 3. Describe one state’s approach to co-teaching professional development and its impact on students and teachers. 4. Establish the purpose of co-teaching (i.e., set goals to be met by co-teaching). 5. Identify data necessary for data-based decision making in the co-taught classroom. 6. Use continuous improvement cycles to monitor the effectiveness of co-teaching and make adjustments as indicated by teacher and student data.
