Collaborative AAC Implementation for Students with Multiple Disabilities and Visual Impairment

This presentation takes findings from a qualitative study and translates them into practical strategies that multidisciplinary teams can use to improve collaboration around AAC for students with multiple disabilities and visual impairments. Presenters will provide helpful tips for strengthening interdisciplinary teamwork--clarifying roles, ensuring shared goals, and streamlining collaborative planning.Participants will be able to: 1. Identify and describe the distinct roles of teachers, SLPs, OTs, and TVIs in planning and implementing AAC for students with multiple disabilities and visual impairments, including how each discipline contributes to developing and monitoring communication goals. 2. Apply team-based strategies to improve AAC collaboration, including structured problem-solving frameworks, role clarification practices, and methods for integrating tangible symbols alongside mid- and high-tech tools within daily routines. 3. Recognize common barriers to consistent AAC implementation across disciplines and develop a plan to initiate school- or team-level improvements that strengthen collaborative partnerships and communication access for students with complex needs.
