Confidence in Action: Using Differentiated Instruction to Break the Cycle of Learned Helplessness

Learned helplessness undermines student motivation and engagement. This session presents research-based, instructional strategies that empower students to rebuild their self-confidence and autonomy as struggling learners. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of helplessness; apply developmentally appropriate responsive approaches that support resilience, independence, and academic growth across diverse educational settings.Participants will be able to: 1. Identify key signs and behaviors associated with learned helplessness in students. 2. Apply at least three differentiated instructional strategies that support student confidence and autonomy. 3. Develop a toolkit of developmentally appropriate, responsive practices for diverse learners. 4. Create supportive classroom environments that foster motivation, resilience, and academic independence. 5. Implement strategies that encourage student engagement and reduce passivity across instructional settings.
