Cooking Up Confidence: A Cross-Curricular Approach to Life Skills and Vocational Readiness
This presentation highlights a collaborative model between special education and culinary arts that builds life, vocational, and independence skills. Through hands-on instruction, students develop communication, organization, time management, and workplace readiness. Attendees will gain practical strategies and adaptable lessons to support inclusive, authentic learning through cross-department collaboration.Participants will be able to: 1. Design and implement interdisciplinary lessons that integrate inclusive strategies, workplace preparation, and vocational instruction within culinary arts, utilizing visual supports, task sequencing tools, and safety checklists transferable to home, community, and workplace settings. 2. Identify and apply strategies that promote student independence, self-advocacy, and workplace readiness. 3. Collaborate with general education teachers to develop inclusive, skills-based learning opportunities that improve postsecondary and employment outcomes. By focusing on practical instruction, this model helps students thrive both in and beyond the classroom. These skills and strategies are designed for immediate application within diverse school environments, supporting improved postsecondary and employment outcomes for students with disabilities.
