DDEL Showcase: Interrogating and Animating Inclusion in Diverse Educational Contexts

Against the backdrop of the ongoing segregation and exclusion of disabled and culturally and linguistically marginalized children, participants will examine traditional and critical notions of inclusive education. Participants will engage in collective learning around culturally sustaining practices that animate inclusion in ways that support diversity in thinking, being, and performing.Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the primary difference between traditional and critical notions of inclusive education, either verbally or in writing. 2. Analyze how discourses such as “just good teaching” and “learning for all” may obscure inequities and contribute to assimilationist practices, and identify alternative framing language that sustains equity-focused, justice-centered practice. 3. Describe and experiment with the following culturally sustaining strategies emerging from research on and with culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
