Deep Dive: Implementing Peer-Mediated Interventions with Students with Diverse Learning Needs in High School Classrooms

In this session, you will learn how peer-mediated intervention improved math achievement and engagement among culturally/linguistically diverse (CLD) students with/without disabilities in a Title 1 high-school. This session shares outcomes from a treatment-control study, including teacher insights and practical guidance for implementing PMI in secondary settings to support CLD learners. Participants will be able to: 1. Recognize why the current Peer-Mediated Instruction (PMI) differs from a majority of PMI approaches and how it was implemented to supports Culturally Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in secondary mathematics classes at a Title one high school. 2. Identify the key components of the current PMI which include progress monitoring, creating additional opportunities to respond (OTRs), immediate and corrective feedback, modeling, praise, and a least-to-most prompting hierarchy. 3. Outline key strategies for recruiting, identifying, selecting and preparing peer tutors to support their CLD peers in high school mathematics classrooms. This including introductory training elements, ongoing oversight, providing reinforcement, and other considerations for classroom implementation in secondary schools 4. Learn how CLD students in treatment classes scored higher on scales of motivation and engagement and performed better on weekly mathematics assessments. 5. Identify common challenges and barriers to successful implementation of this targeted PMI and list multiple practical solutions to common barriers of implementation to improve the potential for success and sustainability.
