Designing Accessible and Engaging Online Learning for Students with Autism and Developmental Disabilities

This presentation offers practical strategies to support diverse learners in digital classrooms. Participants will explore how UDL and AI enhance accessibility, engagement, and retention for students with autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities through tools like AI scaffolding, interactive simulations, and inclusive design that support executive functioning and reduce cognitive overload.Participants will be able to: 1. Identify common cognitive and emotional barriers that students with autism experience in online learning environments, including challenges with executive functioning, motivation, and access. 2. Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to create more inclusive, engaging, and accessible digital instruction across K–12 and higher education settings. 3. Explore specific AI tools and strategies (e.g., AI tutors, summarization tools, simulations, and scaffolded supports) that reduce cognitive overload and provide personalized support to neuro-diverse learners. 4. Integrate experiential learning into virtual classrooms, using simulations, real-world case studies, and interactive technologies to build student engagement and critical thinking skills. 5. Reflect on professional practices and gain a checklist of actionable steps to enhance online learning design, including strategies for collaboration with disability support teams and ongoing accessibility audits.
