Empowering Communities, Elevating Awareness: The Role of Grassroots Organizations in Special Education
This session explores the critical role grassroots organizations play in advancing Special Education. Through advocacy, awareness campaigns, and partnerships, these groups foster collaboration among families, educators, and policymakers. Participants will examine strategies to promote equitable access, strengthen community-school relationships, and support CEC’s mission of excellence and inclusion.Participants will be able to: 1. Explain the role of grassroots organizations in advancing Special Education awareness and advocacy, and describe how their efforts can complement and strengthen school and district practices in promoting equity and inclusion. 2. Identify specific strategies to build and sustain partnerships between schools, grassroots organizations, and families to foster trust, enhance communication, and amplify the voices of students and families in Special Education decision-making. 3. Implement at least two actionable strategies—such as facilitating community forums, co-developing resources with advocacy groups, or improving culturally responsive outreach—to immediately enhance family-school collaboration and positively impact student experiences and outcomes.
