Evidence-Based Strategies for Teaching Fractions
This presentation offers five evidence-based strategies for teaching fractions. Each of these strategies aligns with recommendations from The Institute of Education Sciences' practice guide (Fuchs et al., 2021). We will also provide hands-on practice with systematic instruction and the use of number lines, each supported by quantitative data. Participants will be able to: 1. Use evidence-based practices to effectively teach fractions to all learners. 2. Improve students’ number sense related to magnitude and order by incorporating number lines into instruction. In this session, practitioners will have a physical number line to manipulate during the presentation. 3. Use systematic teaching strategies to make math instruction more effective and efficient. 4. Practice teaching fraction addition and subtraction using equivalent fractions.
