Evidence-Based Strategies to Prevent Maltreatment and Support Students Who Have Experienced Trauma

Thursday 12 March 2026·9:15 am

Maltreatment/trauma can significantly reduce student success in school. Teachers are trained to report maltreatment but often need support in understanding how to respond to behaviors that may result from maltreatment and trauma. This session will focus on strategies teachers can use in their classrooms to support students and their families. Participants will be able to: 1. Explain the effects of maltreatment on the emotional development of children. 2. Implement culturally responsive and socially valid practices with families and with students in the classroom. 3. Locate resources that provide information on prevention of and response to maltreatment. 4. Develop strategies for supporting students in the development of positive self-image and meaningful relationships with others. 5. Implement strategies for deescalating harmful behaviors while helping students understand and express emotions safely.
