Expanding Communication: Narrative Language and Social Media Participation for Individuals with IDD and CCN

Friday 13 March 2026·9:15 am

This session explores the results of a feasibility study of small-group intervention supporting narrative language and social media participation in individuals with IDD and complex communication needs (CCN). Attendees will learn actionable strategies for teaching syntax (subject + verb), pronoun use, sentence expansion, and supported social media use.Participants will be able to: 1. Implement intervention strategies that support individuals with IDD and complex communication needs in syntax, pronoun use, and narrative development using individualized supports based on communication modality (e.g., AAC, typing). 2. Apply recasting and visual supports to help adults with CCN expand complexity of written language. 3. Facilitate supported social media participation by teaching the mechanics of posting and guiding language use in digital spaces to promote self-expression Participants will leave with examples, templates, and recommendations for group implementation. These outcomes are appropriate for speech-language pathologists, educators, and Inclusive Postsecondary Education (IPSE) programs and can be adapted for various levels of communication ability and support needs.
