From Word Problems to Real Life: Meaningful Finance Instruction for Students with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities

This session presents findings from three studies using Modified Schema-Based Instruction to teach financial literacy to students with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Emphasizing real-world application, the studies explored effective strategies for promoting financial independence across authentic settings. Attendees will gain evidence-based practices, instructional tools, and actionable strategies for enhancing finance instruction.Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the importance of finance instruction for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including the current instructional gap and its potential long-term impacts and outcomes. 2. Identify the key components of Modified Schema-based Instruction and explain how the instructional practice can be flexibly adjusted to support the individualized needs of students with IDD. 3. Apply Modified Schema-based Instruction to teach real-world finance instruction to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 4. Evaluate the purpose of replication studies and the key components to successfully deliver a series of replication studies. Meaningfully plan for generalized instruction that promotes the application of learned skills to authentic, real-world settings within research and / or classroom instruction.
