Greater Than the Sum of its Parts: Adding Math-Vocabulary Instruction to a Word-Problem Intervention
In this presentation, we describe an intervention that integrates instruction in math vocabulary and word-problem solving. We learned that explicit teaching of math vocabulary is an important component of word-problem instruction. Come learn how to support elementary students to succeed in math! Participants will be able to: 1. Identify research-validated strategies to support math-vocabulary development and word-problem performance. 2. Apply research-validated strategies in math-vocabulary and word-problem intervention, including graphic organizers, pre-teaching, repeated exposures, schema instruction, and metacognitive strategy use. 3. Understand how integrated math-vocabulary and word-problem intervention can support learning outcomes of students.
