Hot Topic | Navigating Workload in Schools: Tips and Tools for Success

School-based speech-language pathologists and special education professionals juggle far more than the students listed on their caseloads. In addition to direct services, they are responsible for assessment, documentation, collaboration, compliance, planning, meetings, and communication, much of which is often invisible work. Making the invisible visible to administrators and decision-makers helps support professionals and ultimately leads to student success and better outcomes. This session introduces participants to ASHA’s position statement and resources on the workload model and the ASHA Workload Calculator, a web-based tool designed to help SLPs make their full workload visible, measurable, and actionable. Participants will be able to: 1. Differentiate between caseload and workload and explain why this distinction matters for school-based practice. 2. Understand the factors that contribute to high caseload and workload and the impact it has on school districts. 3. Use workload data to support solution-based advocacy and collaborative conversations with decision-makers. 4. Utilize shared resources to address workload challenges and inform practice.
