Leveraging Student Voice Within Transition-focused FBA-BIP Development

Friday 13 March 2026·9:15 am

While IDEA mandates inclusion of transition-aged youth during the IEP process, models for student involvement within FBA-BIP contexts are less clear. This session outlines approaches for leveraging transition-planning principles when conducting FBAs and developing BIPs. Attendees will plan for student participation aligned to post-secondary goals and individual support needs.Participants will be able to: 1. Interpret and apply federal guidelines to support meaningful student involvement in transition-focused FBA to BIP processes. 2. Explain the purpose of student interviews during FBAs and identify strategies for selecting and conducting interviews that align with students' home language and communication competencies. 3. Plan to embed self-monitoring components within a BIP by coordinating input from critical team members to support self-determination, student ownership, and postsecondary alignment
