Meet Me at the Intersection of Autism and Visual Impairment: An Exploration of Educational Needs

The co-occurrence of autism and visual impairment (ASD+VI) is a complex condition requiring careful practices to determine facilitators to timely and adequate support services. This presentation discusses outcomes from a survey study with parents of children with ASD+VI in the state of Florida addressing current assessment, diagnosis, and educational practices.Participants will be able to: 1. Gain knowledge of current processes for ASD+VI assessment and diagnosis, including timing and impact to positive growth and development. 2. Learn about current educational outcomes and services provided to students with ASD+VI, including family service plans (IFSPs) and individualized education programs (IEPs). 3. Identify their roles in the timely assessment of ASD+VI and the practical implications for educational services. 4. Gain insight into best practices for family-centered collaborations and effective mediums for family advocacy and empowerment. 5. Walk away with professional resources to increase their understanding of effective assessment and early intervention services for students with ASD+VI.
