Meeting Children's Needs in a Holistic, Least Restrictive Environment: A Focus on Clinical Practice

This session underscores the critical role of inclusive teacher preparation in Exceptional Student Education and Early Childhood/Primary settings. Presenters will share evidence-based strategies and practitioner-informed tools for fostering early identification, strengthening school-university partnerships, differentiating clinical experiences, and preparing candidates for collaborative, co-taught instruction in holistic, least restrictive environments. Participants will be able to: 1. Explain the importance of holistic, least restrictive environments in early childhood and exceptional student education (ages 3–grade 3), and articulate how inclusive, developmentally appropriate settings support academic and social-emotional growth for all learners. 2. Describe and implement teacher preparation strategies that equip preservice candidates to identify early signs of exceptionality and apply culturally responsive, evidence-based practices to meet diverse needs in inclusive settings. 3. Apply practical tools for enhancing clinical preparation, including building school-university partnerships, differentiating clinical experiences across disciplines, and mentoring candidates for co-teaching roles.
