Preparing Teacher Candidates to Support Students with Speech-Language Impairments: Insights from a Mixed-Reality Simulation Study

Speech-language impairment is the second most common IDEA disability, often misinterpreted as contextually inappropriate behaviors. We will highlight a research study evaluating mixed-reality simulation and coaching to support preservice educators. We will offer practical, inclusive strategies and resources to support students with language processing challenges in general education settings.Participants will be able to: 1. Describe the impact of language processing difficulties on students’ academic performance, social interactions, and behavioral responses in classroom settings, recognizing how these challenges may be mistaken for inattention or inappropriate behavior. 2. Apply findings from a mixed-reality simulation (MRS) study on practice-based learning to implement clarifying vocabulary techniques in classroom settings to support students with speech-language impairments (SLI). 3. Explore strategies to identify and support students’ vocabulary challenges, including the use of clarified vocabulary, visual supports, and simplified language to enhance comprehension and engagement.
