Retaining High-Quality Teachers in Deaf Education

The national shortage of teachers of the deaf is driven by both low recruitment and high attrition (AAEE, 2023). Survey data from current and former educators and administrators will be shared, highlighting perceptions of retention, contributing factors to attrition, and strategies implemented at individual and organizational levels to improve retention.Participants will be able to: 1. Define and recognize symptoms of teacher burnout and understand its impact on retention. 2. Identify current trends and challenges related to teacher retention. 3. Implement simple evidence-informed strategies to improve retention at the professional level, organizational level, and in teacher preparation programs.
