Science of Reading in Practice: Building Educator Knowledge and Instructional Practices to Support Struggling Readers
Despite growing awareness of reading science, research continues to show that educators’ preparation to teach reading is often limited– particularly for students with disabilities. This session will explore common knowledge gaps identified in recent studies and research-based tools and practices that put the science of reading into action.Participants will be able to: 1. Describe current findings related to educators’ knowledge of reading science. 2. Identify gaps in their own knowledge across science of reading domains. 3. Demonstrate a deeper understanding of essential reading skills and how they develop. 4. Share concrete examples of key instructional practices that can be explicitly taught. 5. Utilize a reflective checklist to guide continued professional learning and inform future instructional planning.
