Special Education Case Management is Hard: Preparing Pre-Service Special Education Teachers for this Complex Responsibility

This presentation provides explicit examples of ways to teach the complex set of skills included within special education case management to pre-service special education teachers within various course designs. Case management assignments and activities will be reviewed with student work samples. Additionally, research supporting their effectiveness will be discussed. Participants will be able to: 1. Reflect on how aspects of case management are currently taught and practiced within their teacher preparation programs. 2. Implement activities/assignments in teacher preparation courses that focus on practicing case management skills. 3. Propose and discuss additional ways teacher preparation programs can better equip novice special education teachers for case management responsibilities.
