Student Vocabulary Gains from AI-Generated vs. Researcher-Created Modules: A Randomized Control Trial

This session shares randomized control trial findings comparing the effect of instructional slide decks (Content Acquisition Podcasts; CAPs) either generated by artificial intelligence (AI) or created by researchers on vocabulary acquisition. Student outcomes, AI-generated slide examples, and implications for using generative AI to support evidence-based vocabulary instruction will be explored.Participants will be able to: 1. Identify and leverage their role as “humans in the loop” (Cardona et al., 2023) with AI integration in the development of instructional and other materials. 2. Use the provided resources to create CAPs with AI to support vocabulary acquisition for their students. 3. Consider how AI can be incorporated into teacher preparation and professional development so that teachers can effectively use or otherwise leverage it in their practice.
