Supporting Gifted Multiple Language Learners Using Specially Designed Academic-Instruction in English (SDAIE) and Parenting Classes

Gifted multiple language learners (MLLs) exhibit many of the same traits as their gifted peers, while also facing the challenge of acquiring English. This session explores how specially-designed academic-instruction in English (SDAIE) strategies, nonverbal assessments, and parenting classes and outreach can support gifted MLLs, increasing their participation in gifted education.Participants will be able to: 1. Recognize and challenge the historical and ongoing misconception that MLLs are of lower ability, understanding instead that gifted MLLs exhibit the same characteristics as other gifted students while also developing English proficiency. 2. Articulate the dual educational needs of gifted MLLs: the need for academic challenge aligned with their giftedness, and targeted support for English language development. 3. Identify and explain key SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) strategies that enable gifted MLLs to access rigorous content while acquiring English. 4. Describe how implementing equitable identification practices and inclusive instructional strategies can lead to greater representation of gifted MLLs in gifted education programs. 5. Draft an actionable plan or set of next steps for identifying and supporting gifted MLLs in their own educational settings. .
