WEA Apprenticeship Residency in Teaching: Transitioning to Competency Based Special Education Teacher Preparation

This session explores the transformation of a special education teacher preparation program from a standards-based framework to a competency-based apprenticeship model. We will examine how this shift enhances learning and aligns with workforce development goals. Participants will gain insight into the rationale behind the transition and the design/implementation process. Participants will be able to: 1. Define a competency-based apprenticeship model for the preparation of special education teachers. 2. Identify specific strategies focused on formative and summative assessment of competencies. 3. Generalize the model and strategies to their own role, organization, and/or context.
