Word-Problem Warriors: 5 Evidence-Based Math Practices within Word-Problem Intervention for Helping Students Solve Word Problems

Students must solve word problems to demonstrate math proficiency. Unfortunately, many students experiencing disabilities demonstrate limited growth on word problems. We provided a 13-week word-problem intervention to fourth graders experiencing math difficulty. Intervention students outperformed control students (ES = 1.00). We model five evidence-based math practices to pair with intervention.Participants will be able to: 1. Understand and apply the five components of the multi-step word-problem intervention: math fluency practice, equal-sign understanding, schema word-problem practice, schema sorting, and independent practice. 2. Implement the five broader evidence-based math practices within the word-problem intervention in their classrooms: embed modeling and practice, teach math vocabulary, include multiple representations, practice fluency, and teach word-problem solving. 3. Gain free access to intervention materials to support their understanding and future implementation of the intervention and the broader evidence-based math practices in their classrooms. Materials include the UPS Check attack strategy poster, nine single- and multi-step schema posters, graphic organizers (e.g., Counting Up Fluency Poster, Multiplication Table poster, Schema Sorting Mat), lesson guides, student worksheets, demonstration videos, and additional resources (e.g., English and Spanish math vocabulary word wall cards, glossaries, fluency practice games and activities, etc.). Participants also will receive free access to our website and YouTube channel (which house all of our materials and videos), which were developed as part of an Institute of Education Sciences grant.
