Poster 3: Early Learners: Using Robotics as a Tool for Mathematics, SEL and AI Understanding.
Traditional education often teaches robotics, mathematics, social-emotional learning (SEL), and artificial intelligence (AI) as separate subjects, frequently lacking real-world connections. This workshop introduces a novel curriculum that playfully integrates these disciplines for young learners. Using the Finch Robot, students engage in a series of exercises designed to strengthen their numeracy skills and basic mathematical fluency. They'll also develop a foundational understanding of coding and key AI concepts like pattern recognition and large language models. The Finch Robot can move and turn, draw, can make sounds and respond to sensors. At the heart of this curriculum is Frankie the Fox, a charming puppet who needs the students' help. Frankie faces common SEL challenges, such as struggling to learn new things, feeling shy, and managing diverse emotions. Through engaging storytelling and modeling, young learners not only help Frankie navigate these hurdles but also develop their own coding and mathematical abilities, while growing their empathy, resilience, and emotional management skills.
