Introduction to Traditional Indigenous Games

Part of GETCA 2026
Thursday 26 February 2026·4:00 pm

This session explores Traditional Indigenous Games as a holistic approach to developing mind, body, and spirit. These games, which fostered physical strength, survival skills, and strategic thinking, will be taught to educators as a way to engage students of all abilities. Participants will learn the skills, rules, and cultural significance of games from various Indigenous groups, including the Dene, nehiyawak, Niitsitapi, Inuit, Nakota Sioux, and Saulteaux. By experiencing these games firsthand, students will develop physical literacy, sport-specific skills, and a deeper understanding of Indigenous history and cultural practices.
