Fact or Fiction? Middle Schoolers' Civic Online Reasoning When Fact-Checking GenAI

This presentation explores how middle school students investigated community issues while developing civic online reasoning skills and practicing lateral reading with online sources, including generative AI outputs. We will share focus group and survey findings, highlighting students’ perceptions, use of fact-checking strategies, and implications for classroom practice.
