Creating Educator Housing: Regional Approach to Educator Housing Shortages
The critical shortage of affordable housing in Northern Michigan is jeopardizing the ability of PK-12 schools to hire and retain essential staff. This presentation dives into an unprecedented, collaborative solution spearheaded by the Grand Traverse region's education community. Recognizing the severity of the issue, key K-12 organizations including Traverse City Area Public Schhols (TCAPS), Northwest Education Services, Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools (GTACS), and Interlochen Center for the Arts united to speak with a single, powerful voice to the state. This effort secured a pivotal $5 million state grant to help develop up to 70 income-based housing units for educators and school employees. This first of its kind large scale project in Michigan demonstrates an innovative approach to an industry wide talent retention challenge. Learn how this cross-entity collaboration overcame hurdles, the current status of the $23 million initiative, and the long-term impact this housing solution will have on securing a stable, high-quality education system in Grand Traverse County.
