Connecting the Dots: The Treaties, Indian Act & Residential Schools

This presentation shows educators how to provide historical context for current issues today, by connecting the dots between the Treaties, the Indian Act and the formation of the Indian Residential School System. By developing a deeper understanding of Treaties and the Indian Act, students can better understand the historical and contemporary relationship between Indigenous people and settlers. Beyond Indigenous topics, this presentation teaches students how to reflect on current issues with a critical yet strength-based approach. Session Objectives: 1. Social: Develop skills of critical & historical thinking. 2. Social 30: Consideration of Canadian Charter of Rights; First Nation, Metis & Inuit Rights; Impacts of Ideology. 3. Truth & Reconciliation Calls to Action & Leadership/Teacher Quality Standards: Increasing & applying foundational knowledge of Indigenous peoples.
