Success with Basic Addition and Subtraction Facts

These facts seem easy to teach, but is this actually the case? This interactive session will first explore the number relationships that form the basis for understanding these facts, then cover our approach: "chunking" facts into groups, developing efficient thinking strategies for each chunk, and the importance of drill/practice. You will leave this session with important insights on how best to teach basic addition and subtraction facts. Session Objectives: 1. It provides an effective and straightforward approach to teaching basic addition and subtraction facts. 2. Number relationships, chunking facts, commutative or turnaround property of basic facts, thinking strategies for basic facts, and John Van de Walle's theory of building mastery.      3.  Teachers will be able to improve on their current approach of teaching student addition and subtraction facts.
