Literacy Coaching PK–12: Putting Preparation Standards Into Practice
High-impact literacy coaching doesn’t happen by accident—it requires intentional preparation, aligned standards, and strong district partnerships. This session centers on how Michigan is strengthening literacy coaching across PK–12 through a revised teacher certification structure that includes focused grade-level bands and robust literacy preparation standards informed by Michigan’s Essential Literacy Practices and the International Literacy Association (ILA) standards. Presenters will share how Michigan’s standards were developed to support effective coaching and how collaboration between higher education and districts is translating those standards into action. Leaders from Crestwood School District will highlight practical coaching structures, professional learning models, and schoolwide systems that are driving measurable literacy growth. Attendees will leave with insight into how to build, refine, and sustain literacy coaching systems that meaningfully support teachers and accelerate student learning.
