Literacy for All: Strategies for Integrating Reading and Writing into Social Studies Instruction

Social studies often gets limited instructional time, reducing students’ opportunities to build critical background knowledge and thinking skills. This interactive session for PK–Grade 5 teachers offers practical strategies to integrate social studies into English Language Arts (ELA). Participants will explore research-backed methods, high-quality children’s literature, and effective reading strategies that support both literacy and social studies learning. Educators will leave with tools to strengthen literacy while deepening students’ understanding of social studies within the ELA block.
