Preventing Book Deserts for Equity: Lessons from the Field

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the relevancy of book deserts to the literacy profession. Participants who attend this presentation will have the opportunity to: (a) Gain an understanding of the topic of book deserts; (b) Explore current research, theoretical, and practical models; (c) Learn about current initiatives for providing books for underserved populations in schools, correctional facilities, and communities; and (d) Develop plans to eliminate book deserts within their schools and communities where they teach.  Each participant who attends this presentation will receive a list of current academic articles about book deserts, a list of current initiatives addressing book deserts, and an evaluation form pertaining to their schools regarding book deserts.
