Canadian Values On The World Stage

Since the First World War, Canadian soldiers have brought their values with them into the field, distinguishing themselves among allies and leaving lasting powerful impressions on civilian populations in war torn countries. This is true for the world wars, the Korean War and vast numbers of peacekeeping deployments, the war in Afghanistan and present day operations. Canada joined the War on Terror in 2001 in accordance with our commitment to NATO. Our Canadian Forces served in the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan until 2014 in many different capacities. Most Canadians, however, know little about why we were there, the evolution of the Canadian soldier, the impact we made on the people of Afghanistan, nor the impact the war in Afghanistan made on Canadians. As independent film producers, my colleague and I have created a film, "Fallen Heroes: Their Journey Home", where we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of Canadians who served in Afghanistan. In this film, and during my presentation, I will talk about the context leading up to 9/11, why we went to Afghanistan, what we accomplished there and how we help Canadians understand why this is important, all through the lens of film making.
