We are currently living through the early stages of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), which is an era defined by expanding automation, breakthroughs in biotechnology, an explosion of artificial intelligence, the infinite scroll, and the dawn of quantum computing. These powerful forces are accelerating and reshaping every aspect of our lives. Nowhere is this more keenly felt than in K–12 education, where teachers, schools, and families are being asked for ever-faster responses and to do more with less. Faster isn’t smarter and often undermines creativity, curiosity, and more meaningful human connections. This keynote invites us to pause and reflect on what speed is costing our Alberta classrooms and schools. Drawing on evidence, stories, and practical strategies, Carl Honoré will show how slowing down is not about doing less or lowering standards, but about creating space for deeper learning, creativity, resilience, balance, and human connection. Dr. Philip McRae will offer strategic insights into how life in Alberta is being reshaped by the accelerating forces of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Together, they will share some concrete ideas for cultivating sustainable rhythms that honour personal well-being and relationships, even in the face of Alberta’s challenging conditions of professional practice.
