"Look Mom... Come See My Awesome Science Journal" - Science Journaling For The Secondary Science Classroom

Part of NCTCA 2026
Friday 6 February 2026·6:30 pm

In this session, teachers will explore the structure, purpose, and practical application of science journals in the Secondary Science classroom. These journals are designed to support Assessment for Learning practices and include meaningful FNMI connections. Serving two primary purposes, they act as a guided home study resource, especially beneficial for chronically absent students or student athletes, and as a portfolio of student learning, ideal for sharing with parents and guardians during conferences. Participants will be shown exemplars, templates, and practical strategies to begin using these journals immediately with their own diverse learners. While the session will highlight Science 9 and 10 examples, the tools and resources provided can be easily adapted for any Grade 7–12 science classroom. If you are a teacher that values student organization, pride in learning, dedication and the development of strong study habits, this session is for you!
